Yoga is a spiritual discipline containing a large number of different paths and techniques for attaining freedom, which is sometimes described as Nirvana, Samadhi, Liberation, etc. and has been practiced in India for over 5000 years. In Yoga, we see body and mind as inseparable parts of a whole. Through harmony in the physical body, we bring about mental calm and clarity. Physical disharmony causes mental sluggishness and disturbances. This is why there is so much emphasis on the purification and development of the body. The effects of only a few poses can be powerful and immediate. Regular yoga practice can set us on a path of discovery and transformation. Yoga is about turning our attention inward. During our daily life our attention is usually turned outwards but when we become centered in a pose, the mind slows down and brings us to an awareness of our breath and ourself. We can start to feel a sense of well-being. Yoga can restore suppleness to our body, allow joints to open; muscles to stretch and strengthen; and improve fitness and endurance. Yoga can relieve stress; create a sense of inner calm, relaxation and well-being. Yoga can lead us to connect with the higher aspects of Self.
