Shanti Yoga Teacher Training -

Government Accredited. Austudy approved.

Yoga involves so much more than just the physical postures for which it is so well known. Under the Shanti Yoga Teacher Training system, you will need to embrace yoga as a complete way of life in order to teach it. This involves understanding and adopting yogic precepts such as non-violence (in its many forms), truthfulness, non-greed as well as purity, self-discipline and self-awareness.

Teacher training can be undertaken in-house on the Gold Coast through correspondence. For Melbourne students, attendance in monthly teacher training tutorials, four week-ends a year with Shantiji, a residential week long retreat on the Gold Coast and time on the mat are included as part of the course. The Meditation Institute (TMI) is a Government Registered Nastional Training Organisation with Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses being accredited, so eligibility for Austudy may apply.

The Certificate IV qualification helps you deepen your own practices and understanding of the philosophy and psychology of yoga, while the Diploma qualifies you to teach. The Advanced Diploma Course offers you opportunities to explore teaching at a deeper level and introduces an understanding of the physical, emotional and restorative effects of the postures, together with facilitating students in asana work.

Each full-time course provides comprehensive training, built upon 10 units involving about 12 months of study with 15 contact hours of study each week. Course elements include time spent on the yoga mat and meditation cushion, home study and practice, regular tutorials and residential retreats with Shantiji, a self-realised yogi.

The three foundational units are:

1. Yoga Purpose - Self Mastery

2. Yoga Health - Yoga Health (Ayurveda)

3. Yoga Relationships

The five units dealing with the primary tools are:

4. Yoga postures, stretches and exercises - Asana

5. Breathing Practices - Pranayama

6. Deep Relaxation and Self Healing - Nidra

7. Concentration and peace of mind - Dharna

8. Kirtan (vibrational energy and chanting)

The two final units are:

9. Meditation and Self Awareness - Dhyana

10. Evaluation and Improvement - Leadership

Unlike many yoga schools, there are options to continue your training over several years at TMI. This on-going education includes Raja Yoga (The Royal Path), Bhakti Yoga (The Yoga of Devotion), Yoga Chikitsa (Yoga as Therapy), Yoga for Children and Yoga mum, Buddha baby to name a few.

Course fees include retreat attendance. In addition, course fees for Cert IV include prescribed manuals, additional texts, CD's and products. For Diploma and Advanced Diploma, the prepared information will be supplemented through additional texts and products which are to be purchased separately.
